Our Mission:
Anchored in God’s Word,
Sent forth in the Spirit’s power,
that more may come to life in Christ’s love.
Our History & Name
St. Brendan’s was founded in 2007 by a small group of faithful Anglicans to be a Christ-centered, Gospel-proclaiming, and Spirit-filled church for the city of Bellingham, steeped in the rich and ancient traditions of the Anglican way.
At it’s founding, our church adopted the name of a 6th century Irish Priest, St. Brendan the Navigator, who traversed the seas to share the Gospel and establish Christian communities on the islands near Ireland and Scotland.
Our Heritage
The Three Streams of the Anglican Way
-
As a sacramental church, we come together by the sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist. We gather to share Holy Communion to give thanks to God for his gift of His Son as redeemer. In baptism we are adopted into God’s family. Anglican roots are steeped in centuries-old practices dating back to the early church, hence the traditions of vestments, processionals and sacred music, apostolic succession of bishops, and the ordination of priests and deacons.
-
We are Evangelical, which means we believe wholeheartedly in the Gospel, we understand that Jesus invites us into personal relationship with Himself, and we take seriously Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples of all nations.” As an Evangelical church, we emphasize common prayer, Scripture reading, and preaching the Gospel.
-
We are Charismatic, submitting to the Holy Spirit who resides in each of us and equips us to use the unique gifts which God has given us. The Charismatic stream dates back to the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit filled the disciples and the Church was born.
Our Beliefs
At St. Brendan’s, we hold the Bible to be the authoritative Word of God for the Church and all of life. From the Scriptures, we believe what early Christians articulated in the Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds. The Thirty-Nine Articles of 1571 are our Anglican confession of faith, both foundational to Anglican heritage and authoritative for Anglicans today. With Anglican churches around the world, we affirm the Jerusalem Declaration.
